Fertilization tips: How to raise your chances of pregnancy

November 28th, 2007 |

Fertilization

Getting pregnant is as simple as falling off a log for some couples and devastatingly difficult for others. Over the years, several old wives’ tales have developed for helping couples conceive, but few have any real truth behind them. There are, however, several tips you can use to improve your chances of getting pregnant, even if you have had a difficult time conceiving in the past.

Fertilization tip 1: Eat a healthy diet

Many scientists believe that one of the reasons why the current fertility and pregnancy rates are dropping is because the modern diet is not balanced. Zinc deficiencies can cause both fertility problems for both women and men, as can diets that are too high in fats. Caffeine is another fertility inhibitor that needs to be avoided both while trying to conceive and after a pregnancy is achieved. To increase your chances of pregnancy you need to eliminate caffeine from your diet, eat foods that are high in antioxidants, take a prenatal vitamin and try to eat a balanced diet that is high in fiber and low in fats.

Fertilization tip 2: Reduce your stress

Stress is another pregnancy inhibitor. Trying too hard to get pregnant can actually hurt your chances of getting pregnant. Your best bet is to relax and have fun making love.

Fertilization tip 3: Frequent intercourse

While a lot of couples try to maximize their chances of getting pregnant by only having sex on specific days, you really improve your chances of pregnancy by having sex as often as you can. This not only reaffirms your bond with your partner, but it also improves your chances of getting sperm to an awaiting egg for fertilization. The best part about this technique is that there is no guess work.

Fertilization tip 4: Good morning sex

Because a man’s sperm count is slightly higher in the morning, you may want to try getting pregnant in the morning. This technique will only give you a slight advantage over night sex, but what a great way to wake up in the morning!

Fertilization tip 5: Sexual positions do matter

While it may be easier to climax in the cowgirl position, it is not the best position for getting pregnant. Sperm faces two challenges when the woman is on top during intercourse: gravity and leakage. The missionary style works best to maximize your chances of pregnancy. You can further improve your chances of conceiving by placing a small pillow under your hips to tip your pelvis up slightly. If you happen to have a tilted uterus then you will want to try intercourse from behind. This will help to get the sperm around your internal speed bumps.

Fertilization tip 6: Timing

The final tip that you can use to get pregnant is to time your intercourse so that it occurs as close to your ovulation day as possible. There are several ways to do this. First of all, you can count out about two weeks from the first day of your last period. This will put you close to when you “should” ovulate. Next, keep track of your body’s basal temperature. To do this you will need to take your temperature every morning when you first wake up, before you get out of bed. A woman’s basal temperature rises slightly when she ovulates, so you can use this temperature change as a guide for when you should have sex. The final way to time your intercourse to increase your chances of getting pregnant is to keep track of the consistency of your cervical mucus. When you are fertile, or ovulating, this mucus is going to be more plentiful and stickier.
