Superwoman: Managing a business and a household

November 28th, 2007 |

Both mother and business womanSince the beginning of time, women have been expected to be supermoms. Of course, this was much easier when women had the option to stay home. Today, many women must work in order for the household to run smoothly. How on earth can you make it all work? How can you be the perfect mother, while still contributing to the household income?

Many companies provide maternity leave so that women can better handle their pregnancy and the arrival of their newborn. Depending on the company you work for, this could be weeks or months. Eventually you will have to return back to work, or will you? During the first few months of your pregnancy, start looking at other options. The company you work for may even have jobs you can do from home. This means you could be a stay-at-home mom without having the trouble of switching to another company.

Unfortunately, not every company can allow you to be a stay-at-home mom. Online you’ll find opportunities ranging from freelance writing to data entry. Depending on your educational background and experience, you may even be able to find a job that pays better than your current job does.

Once you’ve decided on a job, you will need to consider time management. A wonderful tip that some stay-at-home moms use is to work during the times of the day when their child is sleeping. For example, during nap time consider doing all the work that can be done quickly. Then after you put your children to sleep at night, work on the more serious aspects of your job. As a stay-at-home mom, you can also try to work after supper when your husband is home to watch the kids.

You must also schedule time to spend with your husband and children. During the day, spend time playing with your children before and after nap time. Then, after your husband gets home and you’ve worked a couple hours, stop what you’re doing and make time for your family. Spend time watching movies or television and just enjoying each others company. After the children have gone to bed, spend some time with your husband before you go back to work for a couple of hours. One of the perks of being a stay-at-home mom is that you can enjoy a flexible schedule that will allow you to switch between working and spending time with your family.

One last issue you must tackle as a stay-at-home mom is the stress that will come with being a stay-at-home mom. You may find that it takes a while to work out a schedule that works for you. This will be stressful. The key is to keep pushing on. You may even find yourself missing your old job because it allowed you to get out of the house for a few hours. If this happens, purchase a laptop and go to the park each day. This will be great for your children as well. As time goes on, the stress will start to subside. The key is to not give up.

One last tip that parents often forget is to schedule a time to do cleaning. It never works to try and clean while you’re working.
