Crafting, sports, pilates and…waddling?!
Week 22
I had strong abdominal pains early this week. I hadn’t felt pains like this before so I called my doctor. She reassured me that this is prime time for round ligament pain. If I had any other symptoms, such as bleeding or fever, she would have had me come in right away. I opted not to as everything else was fine and I had just heard my little boy’s heartbeat a few days earlier. I tried to take it easy. Walking and standing seemed to change the dull pain to a sharper pain.
I’m getting anxious to get the nursery ready. Feeling crafty, I found a project to tie me over. Using acrylics I painted wooden letters that spell baby’s name. The nursery is going to be a jungle/safari theme. One letter has giraffe spots. Another has zebra stripes. The others will be alligator and tiger prints. Andrew is going to make a plaque to glue them to. I think I will make a set for my friend that is expecting in December.
Waddling? Me? A coworker accused me of waddling today. I don’t think I am, at least not yet. I asked Andrew to tell me the truth. He said the only difference he saw was that my back arches differently when I wear high heels now. That makes sense. The curvature of the spine changes during pregnancy to help your body carry the weight. I only wear high heels occasionally and usually not for longer than an hour or two at a time. Otherwise it has been flats for me. I think my vast shoe collection is feeling neglected.
I finally got around to my prenatal Pilates DVD. I think it will nicely supplement my gym workouts. There is a section to improve balance and coordination. This will become more important as my center of gravity changes. Core Pilates exercises are useful as most traditional abdominal exercises are out of the question now. What I really wanted this DVD for is the flexibility segment. It is easy to over-stretch when you are pregnant. The hormone that loosens up the hip and pelvic area also makes it possible to stretch further than you should.
Friday we went to a Brewers game. We had a great time even though the Orioles won. I was a little saddened that I couldn’t have a beer at a baseball game. The fact that they cost $6.50 each made me feel a little better. Other than that I haven’t missed alcohol. The risks that come with drinking are too high to tempt me to indulge.
After the game. we didn’t get home until almost 2am. Saturday we attended a barn party. (Yes, a barn party. I’m from Wisconsin. I promise it was more fun than it sounds.) We had a great meal and a DJ. I didn’t stay late though. I really needed to get some sleep.
I was surprised when I weighed myself this week. 126! I started this pregnancy at 117 and lost a few pounds initially. I dropped down to 114 and struggled to get back. Now I’m caught up. If I were to gain the average one pound a week from here on out, I’d be just about on track. Sometimes it’s hard for me to look at the scale and accept my changing reflection.
The good news is, I’m supposed to be gaining weight. This week alone the baby will gain more than six ounces. Most of this weight is muscle, bone, organs, and tissues. The baby still has very little fat. He is just over eight inches long and weighs about one and a third pounds.
