Charities that collect used toys and clothing

Toy donationThe old adage “one person’s trash is another treasure” is absolutely true, especially when it comes to children’s toys and clothing. Most parents take great care of their kids’ clothes and toys that hold so much sentimental value. We carefully pack them away just in case another child comes along. At some point, we find closets stuffed to the gills with toys, shoes, stuffed animals, and clothes. Passing these toys and clothes on to children in need is the most practical choice a parent can make.

Passing your child’s gently used toys and clothes on to other children makes far more sense than simply placing them at the curb for trash pickup. Before contacting anyone about donations, make sure clothes are thoroughly cleaned and neatly packed. Clean and check toys carefully for missing and broken parts. If you wouldn’t let your own child play with a toy, then don’t donate it. Include toy instructions if you have them. You might never see it, but the joy you will be bringing to a disadvantaged child will be unimaginable.

If you choose to make a local donation, try your church or nearby hospital first. You church might sponsor a local teen shelter or unwed mothers home. Hospitals always need gently-used toys for their pediatric ward. Call them to find out what they specifically need. Homeless shelters and orphanages are also another place to make donations. Make sure to call before attempting to drop off goods. Many charitable organizations have specific procedures for accepting donations.

It’s possible to research some charities online. Goodwill ( www.goodwill.org ) sells donated clothing at retail outlets at greatly reduced prices. Proceeds fund training and job placement programs for people in need. On their web site, click on “donate” to find the nearest donation center. The Salvation Army ( www.salvationarmyusa.org ) also accepts donations of clothing and toys to aid in the disaster relief humanitarian efforts. The Purple Heart Service Foundation ( www.purpleheartpickup.org ) generates fundraising revenue by selling donated goods to aid wounded, disabled, or handicapped veteran, widows, orphans or survivors.

Now, what do you do with all those stuffed animals? Well, there’s an organization that will take those, too. ProjectNightNight.org collects like-new stuffed animals, blankets, and books. Their aim is to provide these comfort and security items to needy children. Large stuffed animals are not accepted. Visit them at their web site for more information.

Whatever charity you choose to donate to, remember that you’re touching the life of a child in need. Your child’s treasured toys and clothes can go on to add great meaning in another child’s life.
